EDI Panel 1 | Appendix 1 | Known Funding Sources
Funding where you can apply for funds for partners
The rules of the Global Challenges Research Fund are often very different, and positively encourage co-creation of research agendas and the capacity to pay research expenses, and even employ researchers overseas. There are several themes of relevance to VMSG researchers – most obviously the challenge area of ‘resilience’ but calls can often have an emphasis on sustainable use of resources too. Calls here tend to be directed towards specific topics.
Newton Fund: similarly, these tend to be on specific topics directed towards the priorities of the UK and overseas funding agency but several volcanological countries are in this area, so it’s worth keeping an eye on.
Both of these funds are quiet at the moment but we are aware that the GCRF should run in Agile Response mode to emergencies.
Funds to visit and do research the UK
The October 2020 announcement from UKRI means that International Candidates can now apply for PhD projects in the UK, and will be funded, but the University would need to arrange for the difference between ‘home’ and ‘international’ fees too.
Funds where you can develop interdisciplinary research that explores or foregrounds the legacy of our colonial past
A good place to look if you have an innovative idea and expert partners is the Leverhulme Trust, as well as research projects they offer International Fellowships and Scholarships.
A topic in this domain might also work well for the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Research Fellowships for those early in their careers.
If you have an established track record and a really interdisciplinary idea then The Royal Society Apex Award is worth a look.
