VMSG Annual Meeting 2027 – Queens’ College Cambridge, 6-8th January

Scientific programme

The VMSG2027 meeting will be held across three days comprising scientific sessions, optional workshops and activities, social sessions including an icebreaker, conference dinner and a film screening.

There will be six scientific sessions at VMSG 2027, covering the full range of topics across the volcanic and magmatic research community. They include:

Registration & Abstracts

Meeting registration and abstract submissions are now open for VMSG 2027!

We are inviting either oral or poster submissions to the following thematic sessions:

  1. Mantle Melting, Volatiles and Magmatic Fertility – Melt generation, mantle heterogeneity, volatiles, magmatic fertility and critical raw materials.
  2. Magma Storage, Transport and Eruption Triggers – Crustal magmatic architecture, geophysical imaging, mushes, recharge, and what destabilises a system.
  3. Eruptive Processes and Volcanic Monitoring – Conduit to atmosphere, and how we observe and forecast it.
  4. Eruption Archives and Long-Term Volcanic Behaviour – Field volcanology, tephrochronology, ice cores, recurrence, and what the record lets us infer.
  5. Volcanoes, Environment and Society – Climate, atmosphere, soils, risk, infrastructure, communication, geoheritage.
  6. Planetary Volcanism and New Frontiers – Volcanism beyond Earth, novel methods and instrumentation, and early-stage and in-progress work. This session is sponsored by JEOL.

Please note, that you are only able to upload one abstract, and it should be uploaded at the time of registration. If your abstract is not ready for submission at the time of registration, please upload a holding abstract and send the final version to kevin@minersoc.org by no later than 27th November 2026.

Early bird registration is available until 23rd October 2026 and final registrations will close on 27th November 2026. 

Conference attendance is in-person only. Attendance at the workshops and other activities is limited to those registering to attend the conference.

Full registration: Registration includes access to all 3 days of the conference, refreshments, lunch on Thursday and Friday, the icebreaker, and the conference dinner.

Single-day attendees: Registration includes access to the conference on the indicated day only. This will include refreshments and lunch (Thursday and/or Friday only), and if you would like to attend the conference dinner, this must be paid for on top of your day-rate registration charged at £25.00.

Workshops

The VMSG Annual Meeting 2027 is proud to host four workshops covering QGIS for volcanologists, advances in thermodynamic modelling of volcanic processes, creative interdisciplinary communications, and Glaciovolcanic risk. The workshops will be held in the morning of Wednesday 6th January in the Department of Earth Science, are £15 each, and include lunch and refreshments. Please note that all four of the workshops run on the morning of 6th January: you can only choose one.

Additional hour-long activities will be hosted throughout the morning free of charge alongside workshops, including the ECR roundtable, a seminar on ‘How to get published’ by Cambridge University Press, a short session on laser ablation trace element analysis, and a guided tour of the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences. These activities do not include lunch or refreshments. Please note some of these activities run at the same time.

Travel

By foot: Queens’ College is a 10-minute walk from the city centre.

By bike: There is bicycle parking infront of the College. There are various places in Cambridge to hire a bicycle and electric bike.

By bus: The Universal bus service (also known as the U-bus) links Queens’ College with the city centre, the train station and the biomedical campus (including Addenbrookes), and many other university sites. The bus stop Silver Street is just outside Queens’ College.

By train: The nearest train stations are Cambridge, Cambridge South, and Cambridge North. The closest to the city centre is Cambridge, and you can catch buses to the city centre from just outside the station, or a 15-minute walk.

By car: Parking within Cambridge is a challenge – we’re a cycling city. There are car parks available at Grand Arcade or Shire Hall. Where possible, we encourage you to use the Park and Ride at Maddingly, Trumpington, Babraham, or Milton Park. The buses from each run every 10-minutes and cost £4 return. For accessible parking at the College, please contact the organising committee to arrange.

Accommodation

There are many accommodation options in Cambridge, including hotel chains and college accommodation. We highly recommend booking your accommodation early to ensure the best rate as Cambridge can get busy!
