VMSG Discord Server
[take me straight to the VMSG Discord Channel]
We have launched a VMSG discussion channel on Discord, originally in support of the 2021 virtual VMSG conference, and to provide a long-term opportunity for closer communication across the VMSG community. Discord enables both live and asynchronous text chat, as well as voice and video conferencing. This is a free service, and we hope it will develop into a long-term part of how members of our community can communicate with one another.
The Discord server has been revamped for 2025! Not all VMSG members will be part of large, lively geoscience departments, and even if they are, their own research group may consist of only a few members, including academic staff, leaving them scientifically (and potentially socially) isolated from their peers. The mission of the Discord server is to provide an online platform for members of the VMSG community to engage with each other, whether in scientific discussions, sharing their academic journey through photos, gifs, and memes, or general socialising. Ideally, the Discord server would also act as a virtual icebreaker for new (and returning) VMSG members, so that they can interact with members in a friendly setting ahead of conferences and workshops, hopefully alleviating some of the anxiety experienced before large social events. The success of the Discord server will depend on it being used by as many VMSG members as possible, for as many different reasons as possible, so whether you’re looking for a bit of company, a bit of advice, or someone to show your prettiest rocks to, sign up, log on, and engage with the community!
